The International Genealogical and Historical College (IGHC) recognizes the importance of Gateway Ancestors—early American or colonial forebears whose lineages have been traced to European nobility or royalty. These individuals serve as the documented bridge between contemporary descendants and historically significant noble or royal lines.

What Is a Gateway Ancestor? 
 A Gateway Ancestor is typically an immigrant to colonial America whose ancestry has been verified through scholarly research to connect with noble or royal families in Europe. Identifying a Gateway Ancestor means that at least one noble or royal connection is already known, and the genealogical focus shifts to proving the line from the applicant to that ancestor.

Why Gateway Ancestors Matter
Gateway Ancestors are foundational to many lineage society applications, including those for Royal, Noble, and Diplomatic Fellowships within IGHC. Their documented pedigrees provide:

• A validated link to noble or royal descent
• A starting point for genealogical research
• A framework for verifying eligibility for specialized fellowships

About the Gateway Ancestor List

Our list includes: 

• Ancestors with fully documented royal descent
• Ancestors whose descent is considered "probable," "highly likely," or "almost certain," pending further evidence

The list is compiled from Gary Boyd Roberts’ authoritative work, The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants, 3 vols. (2018; rev. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2022), and is compiled and updated by Alex Bannerman.
