A Gateway Ancestor is typically an immigrant to colonial America whose ancestry has been verified through scholarly research to connect with noble or royal families in Europe. Identifying a Gateway Ancestor means that at least one noble or royal connection is already known, and the genealogical focus shifts to proving the line from the applicant to that ancestor.
